Ford Drops Focus Electric Pricing Another $6,000

Ford dropped the starting price for the slow-selling Focus Electric by another $6,000 for 2014 and 2015. Effective for all remaining 2014 Focus Electric hatchbacks, the starting price is now $29,995 including destination. The same sub-$30,000 price also applies to the incoming 2015 Focus Electric, which received some of the interior changes but not the visual updates or new steering wheel of its gasoline-powered sibling.

Those prices come before a maximum $7,500 federal tax credit, which means a Focus Electric could start as low as $22,495 if you have sufficient tax liabilities. That's right in line with the Nissan Leaf, whose price dropped $6,400 in 2013. After applying the maximum tax credit, a 2015 Leaf starts at $22,360.

"The dealers will get new window stickers for that, and it will apply to the '15 model year [car] that will come in later this year," Ford spokesman Aaron Miller told Cars.com. The new price includes the same standard features such as dual-zone automatic climate control, a backup camera, Sony audio and keyless access with push-button start.

We found existing cash incentives on the 2014 Focus Electric in certain parts of the country for as high as $4,000, but Miller said he's not aware of any additional incentives on the car after this price drop, though "there might be additional dealerships that are doing something."

Despite its availability in all 50 states — not the case for most EVs — sales for the Focus Electric through September 2014 amounted to just 1,534 cars. That's up 14.9 percent, but that was versus a sales drought in 2013 that prompted Ford to cut the Focus Electric's starting price by $4,000. (Yes, that means the Focus Electric's sticker has shed $10,000 in less than two years.) Either way, this year's sales are a flyspeck in the Focus nameplate's 176,156 overall sales through the same period. Cars.com new-car inventory includes just 227 Focus Electric hatchbacks versus more than 31,000 gasoline Focus sedans and hatchbacks.

Will the price drop bring shoppers back? We'll have to wait and see.
