Volkswagen Gives Up GT the Green Light for Production

Volkswagen unveiled six Up-based concepts at last year's Frankfurt auto show and we had the chance to drive prototype versions of three of those, including the Up GT. We were quite pleased with the driving experience, but less than thrilled that the car had yet to be confirmed for production. Fast-forward to today, and VW has confirmed that the Up GT will, in fact, go into production, but we're still not completely satisfied. As of now, the Up GT—or any Up, for that matter—is not scheduled for sale in the U.S.



Just like in 1983, we can look to the shores of Europe at a car that's affordable, fun to drive, and completely unavailable to our grubby American hands. Then, the original GTI was navigating the cobblestones of Europe with 110 hp while ours received just 90. That GTI weighed in at 2100 pounds, which indicates that the Up GT could be something special. VW claims the Up GT weighs less than a ton and makes the same 110 hp as the first GTI. When the hot Up goes on sale—Volkswagen isn't saying when that'll be—think of it as something of a GTI 2.0.
