BMW Introduces 2013 M3 Coupe Frozen Limited Edition (Now Available in Three Matte Colors!)

BMW M3 Coupe Frozen Blue Edition

By now, BMW's Frozen [insert color here] limited-edition M3 and their matte-finished paint should no longer be new in concept—the company has churned out several variations of this theme for years. (Remember the 2011 M3 Frozen Gray edition, the Frozen Black edition from the same year, last year's Competition Edition Frozen Silver M3, and the U.K.-market M3 Performance edition?) BMW has re-released its Frozen Limited Edition M3 for 2013, but has bucked its previous habit of offering just a single matte color for a new tack of offering three matte colors. Please, attempt to curb your enthusiasm for the moment. Okay, even if the mere addition of two previously unavailable colors to an aging model isn't all that interesting, old or not, the M3 coupe is very interesting, so we figured we'd share the news.

BMW still is selling the last-gen M3 coupe and convertible—plus the regular-spec two-door 3-series cars—until the new models based on the new F30 architecture go on sale next year, so special-editions like this Frozen example are critical to keeping folks interested and sales humming. (Recently, BMW stretched the special-edition M3 family to include the ultra-cool, ultra-orange Lime Rock Park edition.) The 2013 Frozen edition M3 is pretty much the same as last year's Competition Edition Frozen Silver M3, right down to its standard Competition package and unique interior, but now buyers can choose between matte silver, matte blue, or matte red finishes.

That means buyers now can enjoy the Competition package's 0.4-inch-lower suspension, matte-black 19-inch wheels, standard electronic damping control, and sport setting for the stability control system. Those buyers also will settle into a cabin swathed in black Novillo leather that features contrast stitching matched to the car's exterior color. Outside, the signature BMW kidney grilles, M3-specific front fender vents, and exhaust outletss are finished in a high-gloss black color. A proper six-speed manual transmission is standard, though BMW's M DCT dual-clutch automatic is available, as is a cold-weather package, sunroof, heated front seats, and premium audio system.

So the Frozen Limited Edition may not differ terribly from last year's car, but it does have a few things going for it in terms of pricing and availability. The 2012 Frozen Silver M3 retailed for $81,060 and BMW only sent 40 of them to the U.S. The 2013 Frozen edition, with its two additional color choices, will set buyers back just $76,395—and BMW is sending 150 examples to our shores. We dig the matte paint and Competition package goods, especially since they're combined with the current-gen M3's high-revving, naturally aspirated V-8, which unfortunately won't carry over to the 2014 M3.
