Refreshed 2014 Mercedes E-class/E63 AMG Spotted Undisguised in Madrid, Looks Good

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-class isn't scheduled to make its first public appearance until January at the Detroit auto show, but the car's recent visit to Madrid sees the cork popped on this particular bottle of champagne. Autofácil is the source for the photo of the undisguised 2014 E-class you see here, and it serves to flesh out what we already know about the E's mid-cycle refresh.

When the current-gen E debuted for 2010, its take on the quad-headlamp look wasn't particularly well received. We knew the lamps would be heavily revised, and they now appear more like those on the C-class. But design chief Gorden Wagener couldn't do without the visual signature, and so it remains in the form of daytime running lights. The headlights bookend a new nose inspired by Benz's latest design theme as seen on the new-for-2012 SLK-class and the new-for-2013 SL-class. Another polarizing cue swept into the dustbin: The Ponton-inspired crease over the rear wheels.

This particular E looks to have taken a detour through Affalterbach on its way to Spain—it looks to us like the next-gen E63 AMG. (At the very least, it's wearing an AMG-engineered Sport package.) "V8 Biturbo" badging—a signature for all twin-turbo 5.5-liter V-8–powered AMGs—can be seen on the front fender, while the lower fascia is uncluttered by fog lights and accent pieces. We also spot red brake calipers and SLS-like wheels.

This slip is another in a line of recent leaks of upcoming Mercedes models. The 2010 E-class appeared online prior to its debut in Geneva, the SLS Roadster was let out of the bag prior to its Frankfurt debut, and the new-for-2013 G-wagen was hiding in photos for the new 2013 GLK. Based on what we see in Madrid, the battle for executive-sedan autobahn supremacy just got a lot better looking.
