John Phillips: I know a Man Who Can Spell Paul Radisich's Name

In 1985, I figured I knew more about car racing than any strutting biped. Almost immediately, those particular scales fell from my eyes when I secured a job co-editing On Track magazine in Fountain Valley, California. There I met a walking, talking Wikipedia of racing named Jeremy Shaw, a lanky Brit who reminded me of Monty Python's John Cleese, except Cleese has never been known to dig 15 lines deep into the agate of Round 3 of the New Zealand Formula Mondial Series, then testily announce, "Why can't anyone here spell Paul Radisich's name? The man is not a vegetable." Shaw's almost-total recall, attached to his perfectionist mien, so chafed OT's art director that she once flicked an Olfa penknife at him as he strolled into his office. The missile missed its target but stuck fast in the doorway's molding, making one of those "boingggg" sounds you'd normally associate with Wile E. Coyote. READ MORE››
