In 1985, I figured I knew more about car racing than any strutting biped. Almost immediately, those particular scales fell from my eyes when I secured a job co-editing On Track magazine in Fountain Valley, California. There I met a walking, talking Wikipedia of racing named Jeremy Shaw, a lanky Brit who reminded me of Monty Python's John Cleese, except Cleese has never been known to dig 15 lines deep into the agate of Round 3 of the New Zealand Formula Mondial Series, then testily announce, "Why can't anyone here spell Paul Radisich's name? The man is not a vegetable." Shaw's almost-total recall, attached to his perfectionist mien, so chafed OT's art director that she once flicked an Olfa penknife at him as he strolled into his office.
