You Don’t Mess with the Johan: Cadillac Names New Flagship CT6, Future Products to Follow New Naming Strategy

New Cadillac boss Johan de Nysschen is a busy man with luxury on his mind. In nine days' time, he's defended higher prices, confirmed production of the rear-wheel-drive flagship, and announced Cadillac would move to New York City to become a trendier, separate business unit from General Motors. Now, the firm he leads has announced that the flagship will be called the CT6—and that most every Cadillac will get a new name as they're replaced.

We initially thought Cadillac would name its S-class competitor the LTS, as the automaker trademarked that name two years ago, but according to GM, the "-TS" moniker will be out for all future sedans and coupes. Instead, the final number in the badge will denote how big and expensive the model is. Cadillac has also trademarked "CT5," but unlike the Infiniti method of changing every name overnight—which has left everyone, including us, confused to this day about which model is which—any new names will roll out only as the cars get redesigned. (Cadillac is following a similar pattern in applying its new wreathless crest.) SUVs and crossovers will have a different, as-yet unannounced naming strategy, although we're certain Escalade will remain in place, even if de Nysschen can't figure out why people keep buying them.

As for the CT6, it will employ "advanced, lightweight materials and new body-construction techniques," which we assume to mean heavy doses of aluminum and high-strength steel. The car will launch late next year and be assembled in GM's Hamtramck, Michigan, plant. No other details are available at this point.
