Holy Hellcat! First 707-hp Challenger Hellcat—VIN No. 1!—Goes for $825K at Barrett-Jackson

It's become somewhat of a tradition for American automakers to auction off early examples of their performance automobiles for charity. Over the weekend, Sergio's brigade put the very first Challenger SRT Hellcat off the line up for bid at Barrett-Jackson's Las Vegas auction. When the gavel came down at Mandalay Bay, the stonking Dodge had hit $825,000.

$825,000. For a shortened Chrysler 300 with a blower, a headlamp glory hole, and some big brakes. Sure, it was painted Stryker Red in the Viper paint booth, and it's the only Challenger to thus far wear the reptilian color. It also came with a Hemi-orange box featuring various and sundry items/tchotchkes, including a documentary on its construction and a Hellcat-embossed iPad sleeve.

Unless the new owner is Jim Glickenhaus, Hellcat No. 1 probably won't ever even do a burnout. It'll just sit in some climate-controlled garage until it's trotted out at Barrett-Jackson 2045: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

On the upside, a matching contribution from the Engelstad Family Foundation lifted the total charitable donation to $1.65 million. The funds will benefit Opportunity Village, a Vegas-area nonprofit serving people with significant intellectual disabilities. Still, $825,000 bucks and it doesn't even have a manual? Ack. And we love us some Hellcat.
