Land Rover has confirmed that it isn't afraid of following in the tire tracks of the salesproof but gutsy Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet by announcing that the Range Rover Evoque convertible (which we recently spied) will go on sale sometime in 2016.
Camouflage remains the exterior aesthetic for the droptop Evoque that Land Rover shared today. One-upping our earlier spy pics, though, the softtop SUV is shown in a video filmed 130 feet below London in the under-construction tunnels for Crossrail, a $20-plus-billion project that will expand the reach of London's mass-transit system. (A Jaguar Land Rover executive or three must also moonlight as a villain of the sort that has an subterranean lair, because the company used portions of the London Underground for this Jaguar F-type commercial. Plus, at its launch four years ago, the hardtop Evoque bounced around in Edge Hill Tunnel beneath Liverpool, England.)

In the privacy of the Crossrail tunnels, which measure 20 feet in diameter, the Evoque roamed without fear of being caught topless. "The ultimate urban test track," as shown in the video, features atypical off-road obstacles such as flying sparks, construction debris, orange-vested workers, and some type of water hazard. Crossrail is scheduled to carry its first passengers in late 2018. If Land Rover is lucky, it will not have already canceled production of its convertible unibody SUV by then.
