Ditch the Jeans: VW’s Beetle Convertible Denim Updates an Old Tradition

"Jeans." It's a friendly word. Happy, comfortable, casual. "Denim," however, has seedier undertones. It's all heavy metal, '70s-biker, and Tom of Finland illustrations. Since the 1970s, VW has produced a number of "Jeans" editions of the Beetle. But at this year's New York auto show, the friendliest people's car is going Denim.

Alongside the Wave, Pink, and R-Line concepts, Volkswagen is trotting out the Beetle Convertible Denim, the first convertible iteration in the line of Levi Straussian Bugs. Powered by the corporate 170-hp 1.8-liter turbo four-banger, the Beetle Convertible Denim features no actual denim to speak of. The top is finished in "a dark blue, textured fabric resembling denim." The inner seating surfaces are done in light-blue fabric, with the outer bits upholstered in dark-blue V-tex leatherette. White piping is supposed to suggest the stitching on a pair of jeans.

Outside, the Beetle is swathed in Stonewashed Blue Metallic paint, which evokes, well, you get the point. Mirror caps, side skirts, and moldings are painted gray, and we assume the 18-inch chrome wheels are meant to suggest buttons and/or rivets.

Given the most recent iteration of the Beetle's more masculine bent, we suppose switching from the lighthearted "Jeans" to darker "Denim" makes sense, but we can't help thinking that the sort of goofiness of the "Jeans" appellation was part of its charm. Of course, if by some chance Motörhead's Lemmy Kilmister deigns to drive around in the thing, the Beetle Convertible Denim could acquire a filthy, faded, warty charm all its own.
