McLaren threw a coming out party before the New York auto show, showing the 570S in all of its glittering orangeness to a crowd of media and releasing a considerable amount of information, most of which is included in our full coverage of the 570S here. But while the drooling crowd was trying to collect itself after the sheet came off, we had a quick chat with Jamie Corstorphine, McLaren's global marketing director, about the Sports Series model that is not going to be in New York, the entry-level 540 Club, or 540C in acronym-speak.

That car will be shown later in April at the Shanghai auto show, Corstorphine said, and besides offering a slightly lower output of 533 horsepower versus 562 horsepower for the 570S, from the shared 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-8, the 540C will feature a different lower body kit ("aero pack," in his words) and cast aluminum wheels. It will do without the carbon-fiber brakes that come standard on the 570S. One can also expect a bit less leather inside, and perhaps a few other minor trim changes.

While the 540C will be homologated for sale in the U.S., according to Corstorphine, McLaren has not made an official decision about officially adding it to the model line here. At the very least, he said, it would be offered on a special order basis for U.S. customers with a starting price of a remarkably cheap $160,000 or so, compared to approximately $185K for the 570S, which is not a lot of money for so much mid-engine madness. The specific dollar amount for the 570S is expected to be announced during McLaren's press conference at the New York auto show on Wednesday afternoon, which we will bring to you as soon as we hear it.
