From the Golden Mouth of Sergio: New Miata-Based Fiat Roadster Is the 124 Spider

Fiat-Abarth 124 Spider Rendering

On Christmas Eve of last year, we brought you the news that Fiat had trademarked "124" and "124 Spider", names which in all likelihood would be applied to the roadster derived from Mazda's new MX-5. Speaking to the press during the Geneva auto show, FCA main man Sergio Marchionne went ahead and made it official: The Fiata will indeed wear 124 Spider badges when it goes on sale.

In an interview with the U.K.'s Auto Express, "Marchionne checked with his execs if the name had been revealed yet before asking, "Do we want to do it now?'. A brand exec confirmed the 124 Spider name before Marchionne added, 'There you go—a world-class premiere right in this room!' "

Given the Yankee appetite for horsepower, expect the reborn Fiat 124 Spider (most expertly and accurately rendered above) to arrive in the U.S. with Abarth muscle. Lower-powered models aren't as guaranteed, although a range of engines is expected globally. In any event, the countdown is now on until the first hipster badges his 124 as a Pininfarina Azzura. Because as sure as there are wood-paneled PT Cruisers, that bit of dorky business is all but guaranteed.
