Aston Martin Lagonda Availability Expanded, Car Scores New Last Name

Aston Martin Lagonda Availability Expanded, Car Scores New Last Name

Aston Martin's Middle East special, the Lagonda sedan, soon will become available in Europe now that CEO Andy Palmer has pledged to increase production of the retro-inspired supersedan. Also, "Taraf" is its new last name—although that's Mr. Taraf to all you 99 percenters.

Back in November, Top Gear reported that Palmer badly wanted to bring the ultra-exclusive four-door to clients in less-sand-intensive climates, and today, Palmer conceded it "was a high priority for me as soon as I joined Aston Martin late last year." A fortunate few in mainland Europe, the United Kingdom, and South Africa may now indulge, but only 200 cars will be built and nearly all will be custom-ordered through the company's Q division. Since Aston doesn't wish to ruffle any moneyed feathers ("Hey, why'd you charge me $10,000 for ostrich-skin cup-holder lining? That other guy got it for half off!"), we'll never see a window sticker. Neither will we see any Lagondas in L.A. After laying all its finances on the table for a federal safety exemption, the company is barely scraping by in America and likely couldn't afford to federalize the car, especially after deciding to produce both left- and right-hand-drive versions.

Unless Aston can't find enough buyers—and really, about 15 mega earthquakes would have to occur simultaneously for that to happen—and is forced to find a workaround for America, we probably won't ever drive a Lagonda Taraf. S'pose we and every other American Aston fan will have to make do the Rapide S.
