Yeah, yeah, yeah, we know we're never going to get the wicked-cool Volkswagen Amarok compact pickup here, at least not any time soon. But that won't stop us from wanting it—or writing about it. So behold the Amarok Ultimate, a new range-topping model that follows a formula popular among American truck-makers: Add luxury—and add price.
The Amorok Ultimate stakes out a higher level of poshness over plebian Amaroks with standard bi-xenon headlamps, a unique LED running lamp design, silver door mirror caps, and darkened taillights. The polished 19-inch "Aragonit" wheels, silver skid plate, and chrome side steps add more flash, although we could do without the tacky lower body decals.
The Ultimate is based on the Amarok Highline model, so it already comes well-equipped, but VW adds a ton of extra gear to that solid base. A backup camera, power-folding and heated door mirrors, an alarm system, heated front seats, and navigation are all part of the deal. A few items are unique to the Ultimate, including cut-pile floor mats and faux suede seat upholstery. The truck is available only in Candy White, Natural Grey, Reflex Silver, Starlight Blue, Toffee Brown, and Deep Black.

Want one? Well while you pack your bags for your move to Europe, don't forget to bring €41,376.30—or about $56K at current exchange rates. If you want one here, you'll have to wait a few more years at least while VW makes a decision about offering a pickup here in the U.S. (Keep in mind that, if VW offers a truck here at all, it might not be the Amarok.) For now, this "Luxo-rok" shows that Volkswagen certainly has a finger on the pulse of what makes truck-buying Americans tick. Well, aside from size, of course.
