Volkswagen Remakes Its Polo Roster for 2015, Including New Turbo Three-Banger [2014 Geneva Auto Show]

Volkswagen Updating Polo Powertrains for Refreshed Polo

BlueMotion is the moniker Volkswagen assigns to its hyper-efficient diesel models over in Europe, and now the automaker is spreading the nomenclature wealth to a gas-fed ride. VW has detailed its new Polo TSI BlueMotion, which joins the regular diesel-powered Polo TDI BlueMotion in VW's European lineup. The car is making its auto-show debut at the 2014 Geneva auto show, alongside iterations of the Polo TDI BlueMotion, Polo BlueGT, and the tough-looking CrossPolo.

Like its diesel sibling, the new Polo TSI BlueMotion utilizes a turbocharged three-cylinder engine and wears a host of aerodynamically friendly body bits. The 1.0-liter triple makes a decent, if not road-burning, 94 horsepower and features combined fuel economy of 57 mpg on the optimistic European cycle. For reference, Ford's 1.0-liter EcoBoost–powered Fiesta makes a burly 123 horsepower and gets as high as 45 mpg according to the EPA. The diesel BlueMotion, by contrast, gets 74 horsepower and even better fuel economy: 76 mpg. It features a claimed 870-mile (!) range, thanks to its 11.9-gallon fuel tank and fuel-sipping efficiency.

For Euro folks looking for a peppier diesel Polo, VW has upped the spicy Polo BlueGT's output from 138 to 148 horsepower. Active cylinder management (ACT) can shut down two of its 1.4-liter engine's four cylinders under light loads or on the freeway. (We drove a car with ACT and it impressed in its operation.) Finally, the pseudo crossover CrossPolo gets a few new colors and interior trim specs, and all Polos get a range of new infotainment systems. VW's spicy-looking Polo R-Line appearance packages return, and add aluminum wheels, a unique grille and body kit, R-Line badges, sports seats, and special interior trim.
