All Crossed Up: Fiat Debuts Panda Cross and Freemont Cross [2014 Geneva Auto Show]

All Crossed Up: Fiat Debuts Panda Cross and Freemont Cross [2014 Geneva Auto Show]

Keeping its aging lineup afloat, Fiat is launching two crossover derivatives of existing models at the Geneva auto show next week. The Panda Cross is a variation of Fiat's successful Panda range, which serves as the technical basis for the 500; the Freemont Cross is a trim level of the Fiat Freemont, which is a rebadged Dodge Journey.

The Panda Cross is differentiated from other Panda models by its bespoke and radical bumpers and cladding, which makes it look almost like a concept car. An all-wheel-drive system and raised ground clearance help this tiny hatchback to "tackle any situation with complete cool," as Fiat contends. The approach and exit angles have been improved over the regular Panda 4×4, and underbody protection and skid plates further enhance its off-road capabilities. When fitted with the 90-hp, 0.9-liter two-banger, the Panda Cross features a shorter first gear. Fiat also offers an 80-hp, 1.2-liter turbo-diesel. The Panda Cross has attitude, especially when painted in what Fiat calls the "three-layer orange livery of enormous impact."

The Freemont Cross, by contrast, is more of a poser. It comes with front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, but the changes that set it apart from lesser Freemont versions are mostly visual. Powered either by a 140- or 170-hp variation of the same 2.0-liter turbo-diesel, the Freemont Cross receives 19-inch aluminum wheels, tinted headlamps and taillamps, and chrome accents on its bumpers. Fiat says it's got that "tough off-road look to satisfy your urge for exclusivity and distinction." Americans who like the look, don't fret: The Freemont Cross has a doppelgänger in the Dodge Journey Crossroad. But we'll take the Fiat's diesel engines and manual transmission (a six-speed automatic is available) over the Dodge's 2.4-liter gasoline engine and four-speed slushbox any time.
