It only took two full generations of Mini's resurrected Cooper hardtop for the brand to figure out that, as quirky-cool as stuff like the three-plus-one-door Clubman is, all people really wanted was a five-door Mini with proper rear doors. Mini came close to hitting on this magic formula with the Countryman crossover, but it still left folks in the market for a premium five-door alternative to the Volkswagen Golf or GTI out in the cold.
