The Alfa Romeo 4C has become an auto-industry punch line, a car whose ETA is in perpetual delay — sort of like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's backup-camera mandate. It looks like Alfa will beat NHTSA to the punch: The Detroit News reports that Maserati dealerships will sell the lightweight sports car in June 2014.
We'll believe it when we see it. Fiat first showed a 4C concept at the 2011 Geneva International Motor Show. A production version bowed two years later with U.S. sales promised sometime in 2013. That didn't happen, but at least this latest announcement keeps with the delay Fiat issued in September 2013. High-performing Fiat dealerships — some of which are standalone dealers, some of which are incorporated into Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram showrooms — will get the car, too, though exact timing remains elusive. Maserati and Alfa Romeo are two subsidiaries of the recently merged Fiat Chrysler Automobile.
The svelte 4C reportedly sports a 240-horsepower, turbocharged four-cylinder but weighs only about 1,900 pounds — around 400 pounds less than a Toyota Yaris subcompact. Pricing and EPA gas mileage are still pending, but the Detroit News expects the 4C to start at less than $60,000. A Chrysler spokeswoman and two Maserati representatives did not respond to our queries.
