The recently introduced 2015 Chevrolet Colorado may get an all-terrain variant, like the ZR2 versions of the Chevy S-10 and GMC Sonoma pickups sold more than a decade ago. "The dealers already have been asking for an off-road model," said Jeff Luke, GM's chief pickup truck engineer. "We're considering it."
While the 2015 Colorado will offer a Z71 model with bigger wheels and off-road design cues, GM North America president Mark Reuss said the Z71 is "not quite" all-terrain capable and that an actual off-road version of the new Colorado "absolutely" is being considered for production. "I think there's all kinds of opportunity for accessorization and powertrain variants in a platform like this," Reuss said. "There's a lot of things you can do here that you can't do in a full-sized truck."
Reuss also confirmed that the Colorado will indeed be offered with a manual transmission after the new truck's original press materials only mentioned an automatic. The stick shift will be available on the base extended-cab, two-wheel-drive WT model. Regarding the manual transmission, Reuss said, "I'm making a bet on this. If you look at the past data, it's probably not a financially sound decision. But we're creating something here that hasn't been created before. So we're going to take some risks."
