Is recently deposed Renault COO Carlos Tavares going over to take the reins at PSA Peugeot-Citroen? According to media reports, the one-time right-hand man to Carlos Ghosn will be sitting in the chair occupied by current CEO Philippe Varin.

As part of a deal with China's Dongfeng, Varin would step aside while both Dongfeng and the French government would take shares in PSA as a means of helping to rescue PSA from its current financial situation. But the deal would also necessitate a change in management, with Varin steping aside.

Tavares, who left Renault after professing his desire to become CEO of another automaker, is rumored to be the lead candidate for the job. Tavares, who had a combined 32 years experienced at Renault and Nissan, brings substantial auto industry experience at a major car maker. Starting as an engineer and test driver at Renault, he helped develop major vehicles like the Megane, and then became head of vehicle development for Nissan.

While Tavares has a non-compete clause in his contract, French media reports that it will be waived for Tavares, as Renault-Nissan is unconcerned with PSA applying Tavares' vast knowledge in any kind of immediate timeframe. Renault sources that spoke to La Tribune also claimed that Renault wants to avoid any kind of fatal damage to PSA and the French car industry.
