Volkswagen's Tiguan compact crossover, which has been on sale for a long seven years, may be practically forgotten by the car-buying public, but not by its maker. VW is giving the small SUV a major technology update for the 2016 model year in the form of VW's all-new MIB II modular infotainment system.

What does this mean for you, John Q. Consumer? Likely not much, although it does bring contemporary in-car basics such as built-in USB ports to the Tiguan for the first time. (Current models have a VW-specific media hookup that requires optional adapters to connect iPhones or USB devices.) The next-generation MIB II system also boasts a larger touch screen, improved graphics, and the capability to use phone-mirroring software such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and MirrorLink. Pricing hasn't been announced yet, but we applaud VW for releasing the new system even as the next-generation Tiguan is expected to debut by the end of the year.
