In the Middle of the Mille Miglia: We Run the World’s Most Storied Road Rally

It also made us immediately recognizable as Mille Miglia participants, prompting spectators to cheer and ask for engine revs.-It's kind of cool to see your name on the side of fender, even if it's not on one of the -The Mille Miglia begins in Brescia. Cars leave at 30-second intervals, are numbered according to production year and the order in which they leave. Obviously, this yellow Bugatti is one of the oldest cars involved.-Passing a Kieft Sport Corsa at dusk.-Wherever we went during all four days, cheering fans lined the streets, often clustering around traffic circles where they would watch the cars maneuver at somewhat slower speeds and exchange waves with the drivers before hearing the cars pull away at full speed.-A Fiat 1100 Barchetta Fontana passes behind the Bentley as we pull over for a break.-Fanboys in a Fiat Multipla.-A Bugatti climbs an incline to enter one of Italy's many impressive castles in which various activities would take place.-The Bentley Continental GT is big, but never has it felt so big as when trying to squeeze through the narrow streets of a medieval village.-A 1928 Lancia Lambda 212 spider runs alongside castle walls.-Giulia De Toni and Sofia Peruzzi were among nine all-female teams in this year's Mille Miglia competition.-A 1933 Bugatti follows a 1931 Ford Model A into a checkpoint.-1952-Ferrari-225-S-Spider-Vignale-Perhaps in honor of their namesake, a whole bunch of SLR McLaren Sterling Moss edition cars showed up and traveled together as a menacing pack, allegedly corralled by Mercedes-Benz as part of its huge footprint at the Mille Miglia.-A 1955 Jaguar D-Type brightens up an overcast autostrada on Day 2.-The 1930 Blower Bentley powers out of a piazza after a checkpoint.-Parting the seas in tourist-flooded Sienna.-Vintages rolls into the Piazza del Campo, where some of the greatest crowds of the four-day event awaited.-A 1936 Riley Sprite TT gets a makeshift roof under the threat of rain.-A 1939 BMW 328 -1952-Mercedes-Benz-300-SL-1957-Ferrari-250TR-Testarossa-1954-Maserati-GCS/53-So we did.-1954-Arnolt-Bristol-Porsche-550-Spyder-1500-RS-1937 BMW 328-aero-bodied 1938 BMW 328 -This is what happens when the Mille Miglia route happens to go past a grade school.-Objects in mirror are even more incredible (and valuable) than they appear.-Roadside gas stations become makeshift repair shops where everyone pitches in—including the locals.-1927 BNC 527 Grand Sport gets tweaked at Monza.-jaguar C-type Mille -Miglia-1953 Aston Martin DB2/4-The Blower Bentley we were there to chase crosses the finish line. And there was much rejoicing.--
