Sergio Marchionne in March of this year proposed a merger of Fiat-Chrysler and General Motors, the New York Times reported in a recent profile of Marchionne. The mercurial FCA chief made his overture in an email he sent directly to GM CEO Mary Barra, but no meeting on the subject ever took place. "The email must have gone into my spam folder," Barra said.
-We made that last part up. What Barra really said is that a merger would be a "distraction" for GM. Marchionne's request for a meeting was rejected. Marchionne, however, seems undeterred. In a conference call with industry analysts, he reiterated what he sees as the industry's need for consolidation, to limit duplication and achieve cost savings.

For now, we're left to wonder: What would they have called the merged entity, which would have created the world's largest auto company? General Fiat Chrysler Motors?
