Not content to let Hyundai steal the limelight as the first car to market with Android Auto, Chevy just announced a big move in the world of smartphone-powered infotainment: The bowtie brand will offer 14 different models compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay in the 2016 model year.
For 2016, Chevy vehicles equipped with the seven-inch MyLink in-dash touchscreen system—meaning the Spark, Cruze, Malibu, Camaro, and Silverado—will run both CarPlay and Android Auto right off the dealership floor. The upgraded eight-inch MyLink system will be Apple CarPlay only at the beginning of the 2016 model year [pictured above in a Cruze], with Android Auto compatibility [seen below in a Spark] promised for later in the model year. The eight-inch system is available on Cruze, Malibu, Impala, Volt, Camaro, Corvette, Colorado, Silverado, Tahoe, and Suburban. (Chevy counts the Camaro Convertible, Corvette Convertible, and Silverado HD as separate models to come up with a total of 14 compatible vehicles.)

While Chevy is quick to point out its early dominance offering both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, most of the major automakers present in the U.S. market have committed to supporting both mobile-powered infotainment systems—just compare the list of Android Auto-compatible automakers with the list of those supporting CarPlay and you'll see plenty of overlap. But Chevy's early lead is meaningful, if only for the fact that it encourages other automakers to step up and hand over in-dash tech to the two companies with the most experience making responsive touchscreens: Apple and Google.
