EPA fuel-economy ratings are out for the Jeep Renegade, and it turns out the smallest Jeep drinks more than several of its closest competitors.
With the 2.4-liter four, which is expected to be the mainstay engine, and a nine-speed automatic (the only transmission available), the FWD Renegade gets 22 mpg city, 31 mpg highway. All-wheel drive knocks those figures down to 21 mpg city and 29 mpg highway.
Those numbers fall short of ratings for the Honda HR-V, the Nissan Juke, the Chevrolet Trax, and the Mini Cooper S Countryman.
Taking the more economical, front-wheel-drive versions (with an automatic in all cases, for the most direct comparison), we have the Renegade's 22/31-mpg ratings against 28/35 mpg for the HR-V, 28/32 mpg for the Juke, 26/34 mpg for the Trax, and 25/32 mpg for the Cooper S Countryman.
Looking at the AWD models, the Renegade's 21/29 mpg city/highway again doesn't look so great next to the HR-V's 27/32 mpg, the Juke's 26/31 mpg, the Chevy's 24/31 mpg, or the Cooper S Countryman's 23/30 mpg.
To be fair, the Jeep's 2.4-liter four-cylinder puts out 180 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque, figures that easily dwarf the smaller engines in the Honda (141 horsepower, 127 lb-ft) and the Chevy (138 horsepower, 148 lb-ft); but the Juke (188 horsepower, 177 lb-ft) and the Cooper S Countryman (181 horsepower, 177 lb-ft) actually get more out of their 1.6-liter turbos.

Ratings for the Renegade's 1.4-liter turbo base engine are not yet available, but should be better. That engine, however, is exclusive to the Sport and Latitude trim levels and comes only with a manual transmission; it's expected to be a small part of the mix.
When we tested the Renegade, we liked it well enough. And the Trailhawk version is one of the few entrants in the baby-ute arena that offers any real off-road ability. But it's clear that even the smallest Jeep will sell on attributes other than its fuel economy.
