Does Roush’s Exhaust Give the EcoBoost Mustang the Right Sound? Listen for Yourself

The 2015 Ford Mustang EcoBoost is a marvel of engineering, kicking out 135 horsepower per liter and stacking up more power than the V-8 GTs could muster a decade ago.

It's also a sticking point for dusty old traditionalists, the kind of change-fearing bozos who can't stomach the idea of a Mustang with anything other than an eight-cylinder lump.

And that's fine. If you want a V-8 Mustang, buy a V-8 Mustang. It's phenomenal—it nearly won our Performance Car of the Year competition, beating out cars that cost more than a modest house. And it makes all the same sounds that got your daddy thinking about Van Halen music videos and your granddaddy thinking about Parnelli Jones.

The turbo 2.3-liter EcoBoost Mustang isn't for traditionalists. It offers a different take on performance, one that's familiar to gearheads who grew up on small-displacement turbo imports.



But the stock exhaust note is still a little too mundane, hardly showing off any of the turbo's character.

Roush's axle-back exhaust kit, which fits both the four-cylinder EcoBoost and the 3.7-liter V-6 Mustang, does a good job changing that. It's definitely louder, and more turbo-sounding.

Traditionalists will say it still doesn't sound like a "real Mustang." It was never going to. If you ask us, it sounds good. And that's all that matters.
