Toyota’s Incredible Reskinnable Electric Kid Car Is Back, Awesome as Ever

Toyota Camatte57s Sport

Two long years ago, we highlighted one Toyota's most interesting recent projects, the Camatte, when it debuted at the 2012 Tokyo auto show. Sounding like a cast-off Oldsmobile nameplate from the late 1970s, the Camatte is actually a pint-sized rolling chassis upon which children (with totally cool parents) could hang interchangeable body panels. When it was first shown, two body styles could be created simply by replacing the panels and wheels, but now Toyota is kicking things up a notch and featuring the car at the Tokyo Toy Show—a hint, we hope, that it is actually considering making the Camatte available for sale somewhere.

While the car's basics stay the same—small dimensions, electric power, rear drive—Toyota will have an entire booth at the toy show where attendees can customize one both physically and digitally. One of the Camattes is a "57s Sport," which looks like the oh-so-glorious outcome of an alcohol-fueled encounter between a Local Motors Rally Fighter and a Tesla Roadster. Folks will be able to play with both the Sport's removable panels as well as submit designs to be displayed on the car's LED-lit hood. Why? Who cares—you should like the Camatte and tell Toyota to build it, so we can acquire one somehow. After all, adults will fit in one . . .
