One might convincingly argue for the aesthetic goodness of the first-generation Impreza, especially in coupe form. Although Fuji's early-1990s economy car wasn't gorgeous or striking, it was a handsome little thing made immortal by the ripping 22B STI. Which, of course, we never got here in the States. But that Impreza's successors have had varying degrees of awkwardness applied to their styling, from the then-controversial, now-beloved Bugeye to the squinchy, pinchy visage of the last-generation car.
When Subaru unveiled the WRX Concept at last year's New York Auto Show, journos and the general public alike gasped a bit. Could the WRX and STI actually become legitimately attractive automobiles? We got our answer in the fall of '13 at the L.A. auto show: a resounding nope. They're not particularly lovely to look at. They are, however, immense fun to drive, and a bit more grown-up inside to boot. So yes, more of the same, just um, new.

But our frenemies over at Motor Trend have some news! The next Impreza, due in 2016, should feature cues from the WRX Concept. According to the report, Subaru chief designer Mamoru Ishii claims, "We are planning to give the lower section below the hip line a wider, more substantial stance and narrow up the roof section," suggesting Rexy conceptual styling. So, like, that's exciting, no? Given the latest WRX's fundamental goodness, though, we'd happily skip the beautification regime if it meant we could get a WRX hatch again. How about both, Subaru? Can we have both?
