Subaru’s First Hybrid Could Appear This Spring, Possibly at New York Auto Show

Subaru Advanced Tourer concept

Subaru Advanced Tourer concept

Nearly 18 months ago, Subaru re-expressed its intent to roll out a hybrid system of its own, and now The Detroit Bureau reports that the new hybrid model will debut this spring. The timing makes sense for two reasons: First, the New York auto show opens in April, which would give the reveal a convenient venue; and second, the clock's ticking—Subaru said its first hybrid would be introduced by 2013, which is, come to think of it, now.

Subaru officials wouldn't comment on The Detroit Bureau's report, but regardless, a Subaru hybrid is coming soon, whether it appears in New York or someplace else at a later date. That said, what form the car will take remains a mystery. Subaru has previewed its idea of a hybrid with a few concepts over the past few years, from the Hybrid Tourer show car to the more recent Advanced Tourer wagon, neither of which directly previewed one of the brand's mainstream models like the Impreza or Legacy. We think it might be too early for even a concept-car take on Subaru's first hybrid, if it, in fact, is a standalone model and not simply a hybrid iteration of the Impreza, Legacy/Outback, or Forester. Our bet is on Subaru first showing off the hybrid powertrain, then later giving an idea of what model that powertrain could go into.
