It seems like a very odd-time to come out with a home-built supercar prototype, but the sluggish economy is not slowing down Chris Barnard and his passions for endurance racing. Chris, who resides in Bloemfontein, South Africa, has dropped the details on his new Barnard supercar.
Power for the Barnard comes from a twin-turbo V8 Porsche engine capable of producing 617-hp. It can run from 0 to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds with a top speed of more than 186 mph. Chris says that the Barnard has potential of reaching close to 249 mph.
Barnard is more a street race car than a race car for the track. The car is built on a monocoque chassis made from Domex and Docoal high-tech steels. The supercar has been designed to accommodate numerous high-output V8 engines from premium European brands. The lightweight composite body has been designed to increase aerodynamics and to create massive-downforce.
The Barnard is being custom built to an individual’s requirements with prices starting at an equivalent of $110,000. Deliveries start later this year.
