Take the Trail With You With Jeep's Hood Map

Car customization and decals go hand in hand, and that's especially the case in the Jeep camp. There's no shortage of catchphrases and stickers plastered on lifted Jeeps across the country: "It's a Jeep Thing. You Wouldn't Understand," "This Side Up" and so on. Jeep's Mopar accessory division is getting in on the fun with one particularly unique, large and customizable hood decal.

Owners of certain models can select a stylized topographical map of off-road trails such as the Rubicon Trail or Hell's Revenge for their Jeep's hood. Owners can also pick a custom geographic area using Jeep's online tool. We tried it out and input Cars.com's long-term Jeep Cherokee in its factory color with a map of our downtown Chicago headquarters location, which actually looks pretty cool as a hood decal.

Owners of the model-year 2014-15 Cherokee, 2011-15 Grand Cherokee and 2007-15 Wrangler can order the decal online and take a confirmation email to their local dealership where the order will be placed. The decals start at $295, not including installation, and Jeep says the sticker takes up to 10 business days to deliver; there's a self-installation option along with the availability for dealer installation.

Is a large customizable hood decal gimmicky? Slightly, but choose the right topographical area and it works. Downtown Chicago works well with its electrical-circuit grid of streets, but the flat, small town of Goose Lake, Iowa? Not so much. Sorry, Goose Lake.
