Jeep Recalling 168,000 2014–2015 Cherokees for Unintended Airbag Deployment

2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk

Jeep's reincarnated Cherokee is capable of some surprising feats off-road, and apparently drivers aren't the only ones surprised by its prowess—the Cherokees themselves can be caught off guard. Chrysler is recalling 167,749 of the SUVs because they "can achieve vehicle angles during off-road driving events which may exceed the Occupant Restraint Control (ORC) module rollover calibration thresholds" and possibly set off the side-curtain airbags.

It certainly would be quite an event to be in the middle of a tricky off-road maneuver and suddenly have a curtain airbag go off. Chrysler will thus recalibrate the Occupant Restrain Control module to raise the rollover-detection threshold. The recall affects 2014–2015 model-year Cherokees built between January 1, 2013 and November 19, 2014; owners of affected vehicles can have the fix implemented beginning March 26, 2015, free of charge. For reference, this airbag deployment issue is separate from the other (and much larger) unintended airbag-deployment recall that recently hit Chrysler.
