Everyone got a laugh in at Lincoln's expense over those McConaughey-powered MKC crossover ads. Conan O'Brien, Ellen DeGeneres, South Park, and our personal favorite, Jim Carrey on Saturday Night Live all took jabs at the Rust Cohle–esque musings of McConaughey at the wheel. Lincoln, it turns out, is laughing too—all the way to the bank, flush from its most successful October since 2007.
Yes, puzzlingly, those McConaughey spots (watch the originals here) boosted Lincoln's overall sales by a full 25 percent last month. October's sales leader was the company's MKC crossover, McConaughey's costar in the oft-parodied commercial spots.
So what's the trick here? Perhaps while we were chuckling at Lincoln's philosophy-tinged promos, buyers were being legitimately swayed by the message. Perplexing dialogue aside, the commercials were visually stunning, directed by none other than Nicholas Winding Refn of Drive fame.
And then there's the old adage, "there's no such thing as bad publicity." Digital-marketing experts Amboee Brand Intelligence told The Detroit News that Lincoln's social-media visibility more than doubled after SNL lampooned its ads. Jim Carrey's spot has been viewed more than 7 million times on YouTube, more than four times the YouTube traffic of the original ad.

We may have poked fun at McConaughey's ads, but it's always good news when a historic American company hits a sales resurgence. Ford seems poised to give its luxury division a shot in the arm, with big-time investment and a move toward its own platforms. The MKC is a handsome start in the right direction. Apparently, so was Lincoln's decision to woo customers into dealerships using McConaughey's drawly mumble. Alright, alright, alright.
