Volkswagen's new Golf SportWagen—yes, it's happening, even if VW only is calling it a "concept" (pictured above) for now—is everything we dig in a compact: It's attractive, should come with a choice of turbocharged gas and diesel engines, and it's a wagon. Now we have even more to look forward to when the Golf SportWagen actually goes on sale, because Automobile has learned it will be available with all-wheel drive.
The workaday Golf and its attendant variants have offered all-wheel drive in European markets for some time, but not here. The only four-wheel-drive Golfs we've gotten our mitts on are hot performance versions like the R32 and the Golf R. That makes Automobile's discovery extra enticing, as the Golf SportWagen ostensibly will bring AWD Golfiness to buyers at a lower price than the 2015 R's $37K starting point.
The news comes from the mouth of VW of America CEO Michael Horn himself, meaning the AWD confirmation also serves as the official American confirmation of the SportWagen. Horn adds that, thanks to AWD, the SportWagen will outsell the regular hatchback Golf models. The prospect of a high-mileage TDI diesel version with four driven wheels should give Subaru dealers nightmares.

We're not sure if he's been drinking the same wagon Kool-Aid automotive journalists have been chugging for years, because American buyers seem to fancy crossovers more than anything else. When faced with choosing between a smooth-driving wagon (especially one on VW's excellent MQB platform shared with the 10Best-awarded 2015 Golf) and a crossover, we'd of course pick the wagon every time. Waiting until early 2015 is killing us!
