GM, Lexus, Toyota and Subaru vehicles gained membership to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's five-star safety ratings club, though not all of GM's entries made the cut. NHTSA's crash tests examine vehicles' safety performance in frontal and side collisions, as well as roof strength in rollover accidents.

Both the all- and rear-wheel-drive versions of the 2014 Lexus IS 250 sedan earned an overall five-star rating, scoring a four in front tests and fives in both side and rollover tests. The 2014 Subaru Forester also got an overall five-star rating; the compact crossover earned a four in both frontal-crash and rollover ratings and a five in side-impact tests. The 2014 Toyota Prius v wagon mirrored the Forester's scores, with fours in frontal and rollover tests and a five in side-impact tests for an overall score of five.

GM, meanwhile, had some mixed results with its 2014 Silverado pickup trucks. Both the rear- and four-wheel-drive versions of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 made the grade. Each earning a five-star overall score with fives in frontal- and side-impact tests and fours in rollover ratings. The Silverado 2500 didn't fare as well, however. The rear-wheel-drive version with side-impact and side curtain airbags scored a four overall, with threes in both frontal and rollover crashes and a five in side-impact tests; the rear-wheel-drive version without side-impact and side curtain airbags scored even lower, earning a three overall with a three in frontal crashes and fours in side impacts and rollovers.
