Mercedes-Benz B-class Electric Drive Concept: The Benz with an American-Sourced Electric Powertrain [2012 Paris Auto Show]

The electric car may never take over the world, but at least its relevancy is right around the corner. Mercedes-Benz will launch a virtually production-ready concept of an electrified B-class at the Paris auto show later this month. The compact, high-roof five-seater is powered by a 134-hp electric motor that produces up to 229 lb-ft of torque; the powerplant is supplied by Tesla, of which Mercedes-parent-company Daimler owns four percent. Energy is stored in lithium-ion batteries placed in an "energy space" in front of the rear axle, and Benz promises 125 miles of range.

Mercedes-Benz is so sure of the capabilities of the Tesla-sourced electric powertrain that Benz decided to skip a range-extender engine, which was an integral part of last year's B-class E-Cell concept. Daimler's trademark "E-Cell" moniker has disappeared, and future electric cars will wear an "Electric Drive" badge instead. The SLS AMG E-Cell will henceforth be called the SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive, and the electric Smart will bear the name of Smart Brabus Electric Drive. The electrified B-class could be offered in the U.S., but like its petrol-powered sibling, we don't believe it will happen any time soon. The battery pack does not fit into the new A-class nor the upcoming CLA, but it potentially could fit into a crossover model expected to hit the U.S. market in another two years.
