LeMons Alfa Romeo Throws a Rod Into Orbit, Here’s a Photo of It in Mid-Air!

We see a lot of engine failures in the 24 Hours of LeMons, a countless number of which occur when connecting rods feel compelled to escape the confines of their engine blocks. So many, in fact, that we've got a collection of LeMons thrown-rod desktop wallpapers for your computer. Yes, you could say that it's rainin' rods at many LeMons races; we find engine innards on the track, in the infield weeds, and scattered around the paddock, but at the recent Sears Pointless race, a quick-snapping photographer managed to capture an errant connecting rod in the act of fleeing an Alfa Romeo Twin Cam engine. We've pointed it out in the above photo, a super high-res, arrowless version of which can be found here.

After being shot out the side of the Bridgeway Bombers' Alfa engine block, the busted rod bounced off the tarmac and went flying through the smoke cloud behind the DNF'd Spider.

Also visible in Dee Baldwin's excellent photograph is what appears to be an airborne rod bolt.

And, of course, engine fluids and many additional metal chunks are getting barfed out the bottom of the shattered engine. Track cleanup time!
