Toyota Tacoma TRD T/X Baja Series Package Starts at $34,450

Tacoma Baja

For almost 30 years, Toyota off-road enthusiasts have looked to Toyota Racing Development to lead the way in factory-engineered performance mods. And understandably so: The in-house skunkworks operation has provided Toyota with numerous titles at the legendary Baja 500 and 1000. That successful desert-racing legacy has provided Toyota with a foundation of knowledge to build its TRD T|X Baja Series package, the third installment of TRD T|X and T|X Pro Off-Road packages that debuted for 2011.

Warranty-Backed Off-Road Performance

The T|X Baja Series is available on Access and Double Cab Tacoma 4×4 models equipped with the TRD Off-Road Package for Baja and the 4.0-liter V-6 mated to either a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. The limited edition package is backed by Toyota's standard warranty, and all models built with said package will be manufactured at Toyota's facility in San Antonio, Texas.

In addition to a laundry list of off-road goodies—electronically controlled locking rear differential, active traction control, hill-start assist, and hill-descent assistance—that come with the standard TRD Off-Road package, the limited edition T|X Baja Series adds a TRD cat-back exhaust and T|X Baja Series exterior graphics. TRD/Bilstein race shocks and TRD coil springs sit at all four corners, providing additional (1.5 inches at the front, 1 inch at the rear) wheel travel. Exclusive gunmetal gray, bead-lock-style off-road wheels wearing a set of 16-inch BFGoodrich T/A KO tires round out the suspension mods.

Working Hard to Make it Easy

Should you care to order up a Tacoma TRD T|X Baja Series, you must first check the box for the $3455 TRD Off-Road Package for Baja option, which provides a properly prepared base for the T|X Baja package goodies. Toyota claims this is actually a bargain, as the standard TRD Off-Road Package (for Tacoma buyers with no intention of purchasing the T|X Baja package) actually costs more than the TRD Off-Road Package for Baja. And that's accurate—by five dollars—when applied to the double cab with a manual transmission. In all other applications, the Baja version of the off-road package could cost up to $210 more than the standard TRD off-road kit. Only after you have selected the TRD Off-Road Package for Baja option can you then opt for the $5015 T|X Baja Series package.

Here's what it will cost to get into a Toyota Tacoma TRD T|X Baja Series when they hit the showrooms this May:

  • 2012 Tacoma with access cab and six-speed manual: $34,450
  • 2012 Tacoma with access cab and five-speed automatic $35,430
  • 2012 Tacoma with double cab and six-speed manual: $35,735
  • 2012 Tacoma with double cab and five-speed automatic: $36,715
