2013 Lexus GS450h Hybrid to Start at $59,825; Priced the Same as Car it Replaces

2013 Lexus GS450h

Lexus has announced that the new 2013 GS450h hybrid will start at $59,825—the same price the company charged for the 2011 GS450h before a one-year hiatus of the model. Although the 2013 car shares its basic powertrain with the 2011, it received several tweaks for improved fuel efficiency. The new GS450h is rated for up to 29 mpg in the city and 34 on the highway, a big-time improvement over the 2011's 22/25 figures. Total system output from the 2013 GS450h's 3.5-liter V-6 and electric motor is 338 hp.

We've driven the new GS450h and came away with the same impression of it as we did the rest of the GS lineup: that it handily out-drives its predecessor with an athletic chassis setup. The fact that the car's newfound dynamism and enhanced fuel efficiency doesn't result in a surcharge is refreshing. As for how the GS450h's price compares to that of the competition, it comes in lower than that of the 2012 BMW ActiveHybrid 5, which starts at $61,845, but slightly higher than the Infiniti M35h's $54,595 price of entry. The Lexus beats the Infiniti's EPA fuel economy ratings of 27/32, and we expect it will better the more-expensive BMW's figures once they are announced, as well. But those cars aren't the GS450h's only competition; by year's end the hybrid luxury mid-size market also will be crowded by the Mercedes-Benz E400 and Audi A6 hybrid. The new GS450h hits dealership lots next month.
