This DIY aircraft is what the volcanic eruption in Iceland couldn’t even stop flying. Well, I am talking about the electric model aircraft which is world’s biggest as well. Hailed as Boeing B-50 Superfortress, the electric model is identified as light aircraft and is licensed by the Civil Aviation Authority.
This aircraft took shape in the garage of Tony Nijhuis from Hastings, East Sussex and is a scaled down version of US 1950s bomber. With its 20ft wingspan and weight just over seven stones, the jet is radio controlled, took 2 years to come in its present form and cost Tony £8,000.
Tony Nijhuis calls his DIY electric plane as ‘jolly green giant’, and built this electric version of US 1950s bomber from the scratch. The aircraft is equipped with 96 batteries propelling four, four kilowatt electric motors that power the machine to run 40mph along a 50m runway before it takes off.
However, it’s flight doesn’t last long and it’s to descend after eight minutes to recharge the batteries. The plane is made from balsa wood and plywood and also features a workable bomb bay doors and pneumatic landing gear. The propellers have a 2ft diameter and this plane comes in eight pieces that could be bolted together.
The 7:1 scale model’s flight height is restricted to 400ft but the aircraft features elevator control, rudder control, pneumatically operated under carriage and the bomb bay doors open and could drop real bombs that makes it ideal for the use in future and that too without polluting the environment a wee bit.
