With its rear-engine configuration, Porsche's 911 has needed to stay in the good graces of the forces of physics as much as possible. It's one reason it's kept a flat engine layout over the decades, because with a heavy engine out back, such a cylinder arrangement at least allows the mass to reside down low. So it's not much of a surprise that Porsche never built a series-production 911 with a tall inline or V engine. It is a surprise, and a pleasant one, that the automaker has given us a video peek inside its own collection to highlight one of its more oddball creations: A V-8–powered iteration of the 911-based 959 supercar from the late '80s.
