The Volkswagen Jetta may have lost the SportWagen to the Golf family, but much lies ahead for the nameplate if the latest rumors are to be believed.
For most of its life, the Jetta was basically a Golf with a trunk in terms of architecture and technologies. But the current model deviated from that path and is currently built on the older, cost-effective PQ35 platform, while the new MkVII Golf has made the migration to VW's MQB architecture. The next-gen Jetta is expected to move to that platform, and, if the whispers are right, to also be offered in a number of additional variants, including a new wagon, a beefed-up crossover-esque Alltrack wagon, and a two-door spun from the Mid-Size Coupe concept that debuted in April.

While we couldn't confirm the body-style proliferation with our sources, all of this smacks of VW's ill-conceived plan to turn the MkIV Jetta (a.k.a. Bora in Europe) into premium family of cars positioned above the Golf. A coupe was considered at that time, too, and was previewed by the CJ concept at the 1998 Detroit auto show. Today, there is precious little space between the Golf SportWagen and the station wagon version of the Passat, and we think it will be a difficult trick to reposition what has become a lower-priced model so that it slots above the Golf. So don't start holding your breath quite yet.
