The Inverted Striptease Starts Now: Volvo Reveals 2016 XC90 Interior

The Inverted Striptease Starts Now: Volvo Reveals 2016 XC90 Interior

Volvo has officially begun a striptease-style reveal of the all-new version of its XC90 SUV, which will arrive in March of 2015, replacing the ancient current model, which was launched some 13 years earlier. The reveal starts from the inside out, with Volvo releasing two images as well as two videos detailing the interior design and connectivity/audio systems, which we've embedded here.

The two official images show both the seven-passenger seating arrangement as well as the full dashboard, giving us our first taste of a production application of Volvo's clean, elegant new interior aesthetic. In addition to the portrait-orientation infotainment system, which we detailed both at the Geneva auto show and in the wake of our ride in prototype XC90s, the pictures show a tasteful application of chrome, a plethora of radiused corners, and digital gauges behind a new Volvo three-spoke steering wheel.

Also visible are such niceties as a two-row moonroof; matte-finished, pseudo herringbone-style wood; a stitched leather dashboard; sculpted seats; and Bowers & Wilkins speakers. The videos provide a closer look at other features, including a head-up display, jewel-like controllers for the audio volume and powertrain/drive mode selectors, and even a tiny Swedish flag on the passenger-seat shoulder bolster.

Volvo has always demonstrated proficiency in the area of seat comfort, and it promises that the XC90's chairs will features "the latest ergonomic advancements and insights," with a seat core that "resembles the human spine" and front seats with standard adjustable side bolsters, seat cushion extensions, and multi-directional lumbar supports. Ventilation and massaging functions will be optional, as will a new "Contour" seat. The second-row seats all slide and recline, while the third-row seats are said to be the best in the industry—so long as you're five-foot-seven or below.

It all confirms Volvo's assertions that the XC90 is heading upscale as it moves to the new Scalable Platform Architecture and an exclusively four-cylinder powertrain lineup. Later this summer, Volvo will release information on the XC90's safety and interior air-quality systems, followed by technology highlights that include the chassis and powertrains. The additional info starts to arrive in mid-July and will continue to appear throughout the summer, culminating with the exterior reveal at the end of August.
