This 900-hp, V-8–Powered VW Passat Will Spend Its Life Sideways

Tanner Foust's Monster Energy Volkswagen Passat Drift Car
-Volkswagen's current Passat mid-size sedan is nice enough, being solidly built and anonymously handsome, and it even topped a comparison test. Yet, with a maximum of 280 horsepower available from the factory, exciting is one thing the Passat is not. Guess what? Tanner Foust's VW Passat is exciting—but a Formula Drift car kind of has to be.

-

Because front-wheel drive and less than 300 horsepower can't crack a pro drift ride's spec sheet, Tanner's Passat pushes power to its rear wheels. Oh, and it has 900 horsepower thanks to a nitrous-fed V-8. It's sort of like a TDI—if your definition of TDI is "Totally Damn Insane."

-

Indeed, Tanner Foust's Rockstar Energy/Nitto Tire–sponsored Passat has almost nothing in common with regular factor Passat models save for its vague resemblance to one. Besides the 450-cubic-inch V-8 stuffed into its nose, Foust's drift car packs a four-speed dog-type transmission, RS-R custom coil-overs, Recaro seats, a custom roll cage, a giant APR Performance rear wing, and new Nitto NT05 tires. That spec sheet hardly captures the sheer awesometude of the drift Passat—the thing is stanced out on 17-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels and sports an appropriately wild Rockstar Energy livery.

Do we want one of these Passats? Absolutely, but we probably wouldn't be able to whip it sideways around a Formula Drift course with nearly the élan of three-time U.S. RallyCross champion and two-time Formula Drift champion Foust. Still, we'd love to try. In the meantime, might we suggest that Volkswagen launch a new line of grossly overpowered "TDI" models?
