LeMons Detroit Day 1: MGB Battling Mirada for Class C Lead, Subaru XT Ends Day in DFL

-Day one of the 24 Hours of LeMons' "Cure for Gingervitis" is in the books from Gingerman Raceway in Michigan and, after being treated to an enticing mix of Class C machinery in yesterday's BS Inspections, the LeMons faithful were treated to a fantastically entertaining Class C race over Saturday's 9-1/2 hours.

-The Unified Partnership of Pentastar Racers have been attempting to run a terrible V6 Plymouth Sundance Duster for several years. In a half-dozen races, the car has only finished one, so the LeMons Supreme Court allowed their awful Duster into Class C with a 10-lap handicap. They overcame that and vaulted to a huge 17-lap lead in the class before overheating and toasting their Mitsubishi V6.

-The Dover Bros Racin MGB-GT inherited the class lead and the former Index of Effluency winners ended Saturday leading Class C. There's not much to this team's strategy; they just run their race and don't do anything too stupid.

-However, Team Sheen's nautical-grade Dodge Mirada lurks only four laps behind. The cushy 318-powered Mirada is only a slight MG miscue away form taking the class lead over Sunday's five hours.

-Perhaps more impressively, the Pontiac Trans Sport "Dustbuster" from the aptly named Bad Decisions Racing find themselves P47 (of 66 cars) with a terrible U-Body minivan. It's had some issues with a transmission line that left a transmission fluid treasure trail, but with average lap times a full 10 seconds a lap slower than anyone else in the class, they are making a solid case for best-worst racing van of all time.

-Meanwhile, the Anonymous Subaru XT Turbo has had some trying times, so to speak. They end the day in last place, having ruined an axle made of pure unobtainium. They bought an axle they thought would work from the parts store, purchasing it just moments before the only other Subaru team in the field attempted to go buy the same one, having been assured by the parts store clerk that it was in stock. The axle worked well enough for Anonymous that they were able to return to the track for three laps… which was sufficient time to notice they'd destroyed their master cylinder.

-At the front of the field in Class A, Flying Pigs Racing's Ford Mustang leads the entire field by a cool 10 laps. They picked that lead up with clean, relatively quick driving while all other comers stepped on their collective sensitive bits one by one. The Pigs have never won a race and Mustang wins are indeed rare in LeMons, but they've been in the hunt before.

-Just behind, the Arrested Adolescents Racing Program Opel GT "Breadwagon" has churned out consistent laps from their Pinto-powered Euro-GM. While they trail Flyings Pigs by 10 laps, they are currently leading Class B by 21 laps.

-There was plenty of rod throwing and brake boiling so anything can happen Sunday when the green flag flies at noon eastern time. Check back to see how the final day plays out.
