Card-carrying members of the VTEC nation, rejoice! Honda has officially announced that it will bring the gonzo Type R five-door hatchback here as part of its next-generation Civic lineup. The announcement came at the New York auto show as part of the unveiling of the Civic coupe concept, which previews the regular next-generation Honda Civic.

While Honda didn't release any specifics about the next Type R, we're thinking the current model—which was unveiled last month, is pictured above, and is not coming here—may provide a bit of a blueprint. It packs a new, 2.0-liter direct-injected turbo VTEC four, kicks out 306 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 295 lb-ft of torque at 2500 rpm, and hits redline at 7000 rpm. We believe that engine will almost assuredly power our Type R. Shuffling all that fury to the front wheels is a six-speed manual transmission, while a Dual Axis Strut setup aims to quell torque steer. Honda claims that that car rockets from 0 to 62 mph in 5.7 seconds and that it can achieve a top speed of 168 mph. If the next Type R simply carries over that goodness, we'd be happy, but of course improvements and revisions are likely to be made.

We don't have exact timing as to when the Type R will arrive, unfortunately, and any requests for that information were politely rebuked. That said, we believe it will arrive two years after the 2016 Civic sedan goes on sale this fall. This is because the Swindon, U.K., plant that assembles Civic five-doors—and which will be the source for our hatchback models—just started screwing together the mid-cycle facelift for the Euro Civic. Honda typically gives its cars a four-year life cycle, meaning the current hatchback has two years or so left in its run.
