Here at the New York International Auto Show, Chevy just showed us the all-new 2016 Malibu and Malibu Hybrid. They're both bigger by three inches in length, lighter by an impressive 300 pounds, and according to Chevy, the hybrid variant gets 47 mpg combined. Clearly, Chevy's goal was putting impressive numbers on the board.
-The last Malibu to wear a "hybrid" badge, the 2014 Malibu "eAssist" was the mildest of mild-hybrids, and its lackluster 25 mpg city and 36 mpg highway reflected that. Those days are over: For 2016, the fully redesigned Malibu's optional hybrid drivetrain takes components and know-how from the second-generation Chevy Volt to create a setup that's much more capable of thrift.

Chevy says the Malibu Hybrid will get 48 mpg city, 45 highway, and 47 combined. Those numbers aren't EPA verified just yet—expect officially-official numbers sometime before the car goes on sale at the end of this year. But notably, Chevy's estimate nearly knock on the door of the Honda Accord Hybrid's EPA verified 50 city, 45 highway, 47 combined. It also tops the hybrid family sedan competition from Hyundai, Ford, and Toyota. Clearly, Chevy finally decided to take this segment seriously.
