Lexus NX “Shampoo” Commercial Is Superweird, Pushes the Boundaries of Speedo Tolerance

Do you enjoy foam parties? How about not wearing pants? Has Lexus got the compact luxury crossover for you!

We knew Lexus had its eye on European sales when it introduced the new compact NX luxury crossover, but a commercial posted to its Japanese YouTube channel has us, er, concerned over the brand's perception of Continental buyers. The spot—dubbed "Shampoo"—starts off conventionally enough, with an NX200t and NX300h hybrid cruising around for glamour shots and so forth. Then stuff gets weird.

The two NXs swerve off the road into a muddy area, splashing muck all over one another before speeding into an adjacent lot filled with soapy foam. (That the foam-laced driving session seems more plausible than the mud-running business speaks volumes about the NX.) Rather abruptly, the shot switches to a close-up of a panty-wearing model's shapely derriere. While we probably couldn't come up with a better distraction from the NX's intriguingly, uh, polarizing styling, Lexus Inception-ed its distraction with a distraction within a distraction within a distraction: a very European-looking man wearing the same tight shorts. So the ad has a little bit for everybody, we suppose.

Needless to say, if this is what the Japanese think Europeans are into—pants-optional foam parties, which, okay, we can see—we're eagerly awaiting Lexus's first NX commercials for America. May we suggest Lexus incorporates cheeseburger-noshing hipsters riding a Predator drone?
