Chrysler is recalling nearly 696,000 minivans and crossovers for faulty ignition switches that can shut off the engine while driving.
The recall, which affects 2008–2010 Dodge Grand Caravan, Journey, and Chrysler Town & Country models, comes 10 days after an investigation into these same cars by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and expands upon the same recall in February 2011. Chrysler had recently told the NHTSA it had received 23 owner complaints of stalling in addition to the 32 complaints, 465 warranty claims and two rear-end collisions related to the first recall that only included 250,000 models from 2010.
The spring inside the ignition switch may cause the key to over-travel when the driver releases it after the engine starts. The key can get stuck between the run and accessory positions with the engine running and then revert to the accessory position—shutting off the engine and disabling all power assists and the airbags—after hitting a bump or striking the key with a misplaced knee.
A total of 525,206 cars are affected in the U.S. Dealers will install a stronger detent ring as parts become available.

The NHTSA is continuing to investigate 525,000 2005–2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2006–2007 Jeep Commander models for ignition keys that can be easily bumped by the driver's knee and disable the engine and airbags. Also, another 920,000 2002–2003 Jeep Liberty and 2002–2004 Grand Cherokee models are under investigation for airbags that can accidentally deploy.
