BMW M5 30th Anniversary Model Is the Most Powerful Production Bimmer Ever

BMW M5 30th Anniversary Model Is the Most Powerful Production Bimmer Ever

To celebrate 30 years of its M5 supersedan, BMW's M GmbH performance division has cranked out the most powerful BMW production car ever: The "30 Jahre M5." The name will be applied globally, including in the U.S.—you've probably figured out by now that Jahre means "years." It will be fitted with a 600-hp take on the S63 twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8. Full power is available at 6250 rpm, and maximum torque is rated at 516 lb-ft and available on a plateau from 1500 to 6000 rpm. The prodigious output bests the regular M5 by 40 horsepower and 16 lb-ft and the Competition Pack–equipped car by 25 horsepower and the same 16 lb-ft of torque.

The power boost comes thanks to modified engine management and forcing the turbochargers to breathe harder. Unlike other U.S.-market M5 versions and despite its heritage theme, the only available transmission will be the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Zero to 62 mph is said by BMW to take 3.9 seconds, but we recorded 3.7-second runs with two regular dual-clutch cars.

The 30 Jahre M5 receives all goodies of the Competition package, plus cosmetic changes that include its dark frozen silver paint, black chrome exterior accents, black chrome wheels, and black and gray leather and faux suede upholstery inside. There are also "30 Jahre M5″ logos on the grille, door sills, door handles, exhaust pipes, and seats. (Let it never be said that BMW does not like its badges.) The passenger side of the dash gets a badge with the production run, but it's not individualized: Like AMG, BMW took the easy way out of dealing with specific number requests from customers, so the plaque just says "1/300."

Of the 300 units BMW will build, just 30 will come to the US. If you're interested, we wish you luck in securing one. It will be an instant collector's item.
