Hear Maserati's Alfieri Concept Make Glorious V-8 Noises—And Forget That the Real Version Won't Get a V-8

If you've ever had the good fortune of hustling a Maserati GranTurismo up Nevada's State Route 341 to Virginia City, you intimately know the aural glory of a Ferrari-sourced V-8. The GranTurismo's 4.7-liter unit is, simply put, one of the greatest sound-makers in any modern automobile, all rich basso rumble and tight-wind overtone. German eight-pots sound sterile in comparison, while the loveliest Yankee lumps suddenly seem brutish and unsophisticated. Need a refresher? A new video has surfaced of the wonderful V-8, installed in an Alfieri, revving at the Concorso d'Eleganza at Ville d'Este in Italy.

Dropping the engine into the sex-plus-sex Alfieri concept must have been a natural choice for Maserati, but unfortunately the move—and this video clip—are a bit of a bait-and-switch. The Alfieri, which will head into production to take on the Porsche 911 and Jaguar F-type, will be offered with a V-6. Unlike in the Jag, Alfieri buyers likely will not have the option of upgrading to an eight, leaving Maserati's concept a piece of tantalizingly out-of-reach forbidden fruit.

On the bright side, Maserati's take on the six is not exactly an auditory slab of head cheese. One might say a lot of things about the new Ghibli sedan, and we have certainly said a number of things about it, but it's hard to find fault with the way the car sounds. It's just that, well, the V-6 is not the eight-pot and exhaust combo from the GranTurismo MC.

So thanks for the tease, Modena, we'll enjoy the clip of the Alfieri shot at last weekend's Concorso d'Eleganza for now. Everyone, drink in the sound. Bathe in it. Slam your body down and wind it all around. After all, if you wanna be the Alfieri's lover, you've gotta get with its friends—like the V-6–powered production model.
